    Description

All-American Comics #16 (DC, 1940) CGC VG- 3.5 Cream to off-white pages. One of the most coveted Golden Age comics of all, it's ranked #4 on Overstreet's Top 100 Golden Age Comics list, just behind Superman #1. Renowned for its featuring the origin and first appearance of Green Lantern, the issue is rarer than most of the other key comics on that list, earning an Overstreet "Rare" and a "7" ("scarce") from The Photo-Journal Guide to Comic Books, and consistently auctioning for far above Guide values. And, it's notoriously difficult to find in higher grades, as CGC's census shows.

The owner of this copy, Lee Castleman, had the co-creator of Green Lantern, Bill Finger, sign it in 1966 at the same convention he obtained the classic book in a trade for another Golden Age biggie, a copy of Detective Comics #38! See a photo of the signature in our catalog and online.

As Mr. Castleman, explains about the photo, "Here I am at the 1966 Academy Con 2 at the City Squire Inn in New York City, as pictured in the Sunday New York Daily News on August 14, 1966. I am holding up my All-American #16 and Golden Age Green Lantern #1 [also in this auction] both signed by Bill Finger, who was very gracious to me, flattered and a bit disconcerted by the attention, as evidenced by his indecision whether to inscribe 'To' or 'From'!"

The iconic cover is by Sheldon Moldoff, with Martin Nodell providing the Green Lantern story art. Overstreet 2014 VG 4.0 value = $38,333. CGC census 11/14: 6 in 3.5, 13 higher.
