Description

Best Comics #1 (Better Publications, 1939) CGC FN+ 6.5 Cream to off-white pages. A historically significant and quite rare comic, this unique sideways and square-bound book contains the first appearance of the first minority superhero, the Red Mask, and is exceedingly rare in high grades. It's become such a hot book over the past year that in September a VG/FN 5.0 copy sold for $5,760 and a FN/VF 7.0 (the top copy on CGC's current census) sold for $26,400; it's just plain rare in general, with the Photo-Journal Guide to Comic Books rating it a "7" ("scarce") on its Scarcity Index. We've encountered just six copies to date, of which this is one of four CGC-certified copies. Overstreet 2024 FN 6.0 value = $1,428; VF 8.0 value = $3,475. CGC census 11/24: 1 in 6.5, 1 higher. From the Josh Entin Collection.
