Marvel Mystery Comics #5 (Timely, 1940) CGC VG+ 4.5 Off-white to white pages. Is this the toughest issue of Marvel Mystery to find? We say so, since six long years have passed since we've seen a copy... or at least a copy that has a cover! It's also the only Marvel Mystery that Gerber gave his "7" rating to. Overstreet calls it "scarce" and ranks it among the 30 most valuable Golden Age comics. This is just the second time the Human Torch appeared on a cover, and note that his look here is a lot closer to the way he's usually portrayed than the way he looked on the cover of Marvel Comics #1. Of course, his own series was still about half a year away at this point. according to Overstreet. The cover art by Alex Schomburg is a classic and one of his earliest efforts for Timely ... of course to this point Timely had only published a handful of comic issues, period. The last copy we sold was actually this same copy which fetched $4,025 in 2004... a price that seems like a steal now. Overstreet 2009 VG 4.0 value = $5,000. CGC census 4/10: 2 in 4.5, 3 higher.
