    Description

Marvel Comics #1 October Copy (Timely, 1939) CGC FR 1.0 Off-white to white pages. A rare "October" copy of the first Marvel comic! This is the historic comic book that begat all Timelys, Atlases, and Marvels to come, and that is ranked third in value among all comics ever. It includes the blockbusting first appearances of the Human Torch, Sub-Mariner, Angel, and Ka-Zar by Carl Burgos, Bill Everett, and Paul Gustavson.
The OCT date on the cover is a big deal, as the vast majority of surviving copies of this book have the OCT blacked out and NOV printed above it. Whether this is correctly termed a first state or a first printing, surely as the earlier version it would be more desirable even if it were not the scarcer version. But to give you an idea of the scarcity, Heritage has auctioned more than 40 copies of this issue to date, and we have only handled one prior October copy, the Nicolas Cage copy we sold way back in 2002.
CGC notes, "Spine of cover completely split & re-attached with tape. Cover detached. 1st wrap completely split and detached." Overstreet 2017 GD 2.0 value = $28,000. CGC census 5/18: 1 in 1.0, 25 higher.
