Pep Comics #22 (MLJ, 1941) CGC FN/VF 7.0 Off-white to white pages. The first appearance of Archie! And this is one tough book to find too, especially in nice condition. In our 13 years of auctioning many Action #1s and Detective #27s, we have had just two Pep #22s, a Good and an Apparent Fair/Good. While the Shield, Dusty, and the Hangman got the coveted cover spot on this 22nd issue, the real star doesn't show until a six-page story, tucked away in the second half of the comic book. Archie Andrews makes his very first appearance right here, along with his pals Jughead and Betty (Veronica comes a little later). Archie has been "America's Teenager" for so many years, it's hard to imagine him happening before World War II, but this issue was cover dated December, 1941, and came out a few weeks before Pearl Harbor was attacked -- in fact, the cover gets a jump on America's involvement in the war. The enduring appeal of Archie and his gang is stronger than ever these days, with the character's recent "death" in Life With Archie, so we expect this "fresh to the market" book (which lists as #11 in Overstreet's Top 100 Golden Age Comics) to be quite the crowd pleaser in this auction. The last unrestored copy that sold was a CGC 6.5, which brought a whopping $111,000 in 2012! CGC notes, "Minor amount of color touch on cover," but the copy rates a blue Universal header. Overstreet 2014 FN 6.0 value = $42,000; VF 8.0 value = $98,000. CGC census 11/14: 1 in 7.0, 2 higher. From the High Five Collection.
