Description

New Book of Comics #1 (DC, c. 1937) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages. This is the only copy graded above 8.0 of one of the 60 most valuable Golden Age comics. For many years Overstreet didn't even list values above 8.0 for the book!

Overstreet lists this as the first regular-size comic annual, and the second DC annual of any size. The issue's a coveted Gerber "8," and it's dubbed "rare" by Overstreet as well.

It's not clear why Overstreet changed the stated publication date from 1936 to 1937 in its listing some years ago. The cover copyright date is 1936, and the stories reprinted are from New Comics #1-4 and More Fun Comics #9, none of which had a cover date later than March 1936. So it's plausible that this could have been a 1936 publication. Also, the cover bears the copyright "Nicholson Pub. Co." Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson was the founder of DC, but didn't run the company for very long.

Siegel and Shuster's Dr. Occult is among the characters inside. Overstreet 2010 NM- 9.2 value = $30,000. CGC census 10/10: 1 in 9.4, none higher.
