Description
Archie Comics #1 (MLJ, 1942) CGC Apparent VF 8.0 Extensive (P) White pages. In 2011, an unrestored CGC-graded copy in VF+ 8.5, the finest copy known, sold for a record $167,300. Only one other unrestored copy has earned a grade higher than FN/VF 7.0. Our current offering compares very favorably in appearance to the record-breaking copy, and it's the highest-graded restored copy CGC has certified to date. This beautiful copy hails from the collection of Rick Sloane, who has provided Archie data to The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide for over 25 years. There are currently only seven copies - unrestored or restored - that have received a grade of 7.0 or higher. That the current owners of both of the finest unrestored copies have rejected substantial offers for their copies elevates this copy to one of the very finest copies available. The issue currently ranks #20 on Overstreet's Top 100 Golden Age Comics, and we continue to recommend that you go after it whenever offered, in any grade!
Bob Montana provided cover and interior art for Archie Comics #1, which featured the first appearance of Mrs. Andrews and the second "origin" of Veronica (the other appeared in Pep Comics #26). While not Archie's first appearance, the issue is considered the first teen comic by Overstreet. Archie's previous appearances were in Pep Comics and Jackpot Comics, where his series ran alongside superhero characters and had not been occasioned by a lone cover appearance.
Archie Comics is still going strong today, over 600 issues later! Still relevant and popular, recent highlights include the introduction of Kevin Keller, the first gay character in the Archie universe.
CGC notes, "Restoration includes: color touch, pieces added, tear seals, cleaned, reinforced." Overstreet 2012 GD 2.0 value = $5,333; VG 4.0 value = $10,667; FN 6.0 value = $16,000; VF 8.0 value = $40,000.
