Archie Comics #1 (Archie, 1942) CGC GD/VG 3.0 Off-white pages. If this book were ever for sale at Guide, hordes of collectors would be willing to snap it up! But even at the premium this book commands, pass it up at your peril because nobody who buys one ever seems to want to re-sell it! We've never seen a high-grade copy (the highest-graded in CGC's census to date is just a 6.5), so this is one instance where a GD/VG is a must-grab. While not Archie's first appearance, this is a key issue, for a couple of reasons. It's got what you might call the origin of the Archie-Veronica relationship, as we learn how Archie read about the uptown girl and sent a letter to her Park Avenue apartment to invite her to his prom in little old Riverdale (this thankfully replaced the previous ho-hum account of their first meeting, told in Pep Comics #26). This book also has the very first appearance of Mrs. Andrews, Archie's mom. This is also considered the first teen comic by Overstreet -- up to now, Archie had been appearing in anthology books like Pep and Jackpot. CGC notes, "3 pieces of tape on interior cover. 2 extra staples added, not from manufacturing." Overstreet 2006 GD 2.0 value = $1,333; VG 4.0 value = $2,666. CGC census 10/06: 4 in 3.0, 5 higher.
