Donald Duck Four Color Bound Volume With Carl Barks' First Fan Sketch (Dell, 1942-49).
This is a very special bound volume, which comes to Heritage from a gentleman who has been widely acknowledged as the world's ultimate fan of the comic book work of Carl Barks - Malcolm Willits. He is the fan who first tracked down the unpublished name of the man known by duck aficionados as "the Good Duck Artist" in those years when Disney allowed only Walt's name to be signed on any comics featuring Donald (or any of the other Disney characters, for that matter). Malcolm wrote to the Disney Studios in 1957 about who this artist was, and managed to meet Mr. Barks in 1961. In fact, Carl's very first "fan sketch" was done for Malcolm on that occasion, and that sketch (backed with another fan sketch by Jack Hannah) is included in this incredible volume.

What other treasures are there in this magical book? How about the first seven Donald Duck Four Color issues -- #9 ("Donald Duck Finds Pirate Gold"), 29 ("Mummy's Ring"), 62 ("Frozen Gold"), 108 ("Terror of the River"), 147 ("Volcano Valley"), 159 ("The Ghost of the Grotto"), and 178 ("Christmas on Bear Mountain", which introduced Uncle Scrooge). There's also the three March of Comics issues with Barks' Duck stories -- #4 ("Maharajah Donald"), 20 ("Darkest Africa"), and 41 ("Race to the South Seas"). And still more! Namely, the Walt Disney's Comics and Stories Christmas Giveaway from 1943 (with a Jack Hannah Donald story), plus five Firestone Christmas Giveaways (1945-49). This is the ultimate Barks Duck volume!

The comics inside are all trimmed and bound, of course, but most issues have smooth covers and supple, off-white pages. A few, like the Firestone 1945 issue, are a little wrinkled, and a few pages have old cellophane tape repairs, but overall, the comics look very nice. The cover is black leatherette, with gold embossing on the spine, and the interior binding is tight and secure, with no loose pages or separations.

It's a truly unique volume for the Barks' collector! Overstreet 2012 VG 4.0 value for group = $8,440.
