Detective Comics #38 (DC, 1940) CGC VG/FN 5.0 Off-white to white pages. The Batman character, as originally conceived by Bob Kane, was a dark, foreboding crimefighter motivated by a desire to revenge the death of his parents, who were both killed during a holdup. While that kind of "antihero" is all the rage these days, back in 1940, the editors at DC felt the book needed a slightly lighter tone to attract the kiddies. Enter Jerry Robinson, Kane's young assistant, who came up with the idea of an acrobatic youngster fighting alongside Batman, and thus, Robin was born -- and his origin and first appearance is featured right here in the pages of this very comic book. Kane and Robinson supplied cover and story art, along with early DC studio artist Fred Guardineer. CGC notes, "Very minor amount of glue on cover." Overstreet 2014 VG 4.0 value = $10,400; FN 6.0 value = $15,600. CGC census 11/14: 5 in 5.0, 13 higher.
