    Description

Detective Comics #31 (DC, 1939) CGC VG/FN 5.0 Off-white to white pages. We haven't seen an unrestored copy of this key in a very long time, and we've seen very hefty offers for other such copies turned down! The second most valuable issue in the storied run of the title that gave DC its name. Of course, there's the classic Bob Kane cover -- perhaps his greatest -- and first appearances of the Batplane, the Batarang, Julie Madison, and Batman's first super-powered foe, the Monk, that drives the collector demand, but it's also extremely difficult to find this book in any grade above VG 4.0. At VG/FN 5.0, it's bested by only seven other copies on CGC's census. Even the iconic #27 issue has had more issues certified at VG/FN 5.0 or better (16 copies to date) than #31 (11 copies to date). Currently listed at #11 on Overstreet's Top 100 Golden Age Comics list. Overstreet 2017 VG 4.0 value = $50,000; FN 6.0 value = $75,000. CGC census 11/17: 5 in 5.0, 7 higher.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
