Crime Does Not Pay #25 (Lev Gleason, 1943) CGC VF 8.0 Off-white to white pages. This title was the very first crime comic, and what a success it became -- the circulation eventually approached one million copies. This is an earlier issue than you might think, in fact it's only the fourth issue of the title. Editor Charles Biro doubled as the cover artist; here he gives us a criminal whose phone just went dead, so to speak. The partial photo cover shows real-life mobster Dutch Schultz (misspelled on the cover) and Schultz's mouthpiece Dixie Davis. To date, only one copy of this issue has been certified with a higher grade by CGC. Overstreet 2004 VF 8.0 value = $363.
