Description

Crime Does Not Pay #22 (#1) (Lev Gleason, 1942) CGC VF+ 8.5 White pages. The first crime comic book, and one of the most valuable! This marked the start of an entire genre, and helped put the comics medium on a path that ended with the introduction of the Comics Code in the mid-1950s. This is a very tough issue to find in high grade. The Mile High copy, which we sold as a raw NM- years ago, is the only one we have ever seen that we would rank ahead of this one, and we have sold multiple pedigree copies with grades lower than the one offered here. The cover is by Charles Biro, and the story art is by Dick Briefer and Bob Montana. It is rated a "7" ("scarce") by The Photo-Journal Guide to Comic Books and currently listed on Overstreet's Top 10 Crime Comics. Overstreet 2024 VF 8.0 value = $6,117; VF/NM 9.0 value = $10,809. CGC census 10/25: 1 in 8.5, 1 higher.
