Captain Marvel Adventures #nn (#1) (Fawcett Publications, 1941) CGC VG/FN 5.0 Cream to off-white pages. This is currently tied for the highest-grade of any unrestored copy of the book, illustrating the validity of Overstreet's assertion that the book is "rarely found in Fine or Mint condition," due to being printed on unstable paper stock. We see this issue far less often than the other Fawcett keys, and it's one of Overstreet's Top 100 Golden Age Comics. At its height, this series was the best-selling comic in America, with total sales for the 1944 issues surpassing 14 million copies! At one point, it even went bi-weekly to meet public demand, and with a Captain Marvel feature film on the horizon, demand for his first comic is sure to escalate (along with the price!).
This is the only time that Jack Kirby worked on Captain Marvel, as it was drawn on the "night shift," at the time that Kirby was working on Captain America during the day. The issue's cover is by C. C. Beck. This tough issue is not often found even in the top "pedigree" collections. Overstreet 2015 VG 4.0 value = $6,000; FN 6.0 value = $9,000. CGC census 5/16: 2 in 5.0, none higher.
