Description
Batman #1 (DC, 1940) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white pages. This is the highest-graded copy on CGC's census of one of the top books in the hobby. And by any measure, it's one of the most desirable comic books Heritage has ever auctioned. And we hasten to mention that the book is being sold without reserve. As of Overstreet Guide #42, the latest edition as of the time this catalog went to press, Batman #1 is ranked as the sixth most-valuable comic book. However, given the demand, we think it's possible that either this summer or in a coming year it will pass Marvel Comics #1 and/or All-American Comics #16 to make the top five. Frankly, we receive more inquiries about this issue than either of the aforementioned keys.
This issue has the first appearances of both the Joker and Catwoman, two of the very few villains to have "household name" status. The cover art by Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson is one of the most recognizable of all comic book covers.
It's probably fair to say that most collectors judge a Batman #1 by how well-preserved the yellow background of the front cover is, as we've all seen copies that are quite smudged-up or have obtrusive markings. The only such blemishes here are very minor in nature, as you would expect of the copy holding the top spot on CGC's census.
At the risk of stating the obvious: this is a "blue chip" comic that would be the crown jewel of almost any collection.
Overstreet 2013 NM- 9.2 value = $420,000. CGC census 7/13: 1 in 9.2, none higher. Auctioned on behalf of Tadano America Corporation.
