    Description

Batman #1 (DC, 1940) CGC FN- 5.5 Off-white pages. The first appearances of the nefarious Joker and mischievous Catwoman are two big reasons why this issue is ranked #6 on Overstreet's list of Top 100 Golden Age Comics. The importance of the Batman series is evidenced by this simple fact: the title has been in continuous publication for more than 75 years!
This first issue was assembled from the story inventory of Detective Comics, but the two villains who debuted here most certainly topped any baddies that had been seen in Detective! The malevolent Joker was by some accounts intended to be only a one-off character, and what was originally his death at the end of the issue was modified to be a non-fatal injury. And as for Catwoman, who's still called "The Cat" here, what made her a standout among other super-villains was not necessarily her abilities, but rather the instant romantic attraction between her and the Caped Crusader, seen in this very first story, as Batman "accidentally" lets Catwoman escape. Also of note are a retelling of Batman's origin and a classic (and much-imitated) cover by Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson. Currently one of the top 20 CGC-graded copies! Overstreet 2016 FN 6.0 value = $81,000. CGC census 11/16: 2 in 5.5, 19 higher.
