Startling Comics #49 Mile High Pedigree (Better Publications, 1948) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white to white pages. One of the best covers by Alex Schomburg, arguably the top cover artist of the Golden Age. A recent online poll to determine the best Schomburg cover ranked this as the second-best of his entire career behind only Suspense Comics #3, a book that in high grade has since surpassed the $100,000 mark. Startling #49 hasn't quite reached those same price levels to date, but we do expect the 9.2 Overstreet value to be easily blown out of the water by this Edgar Church Mile High pedigree example. This airbrushed cover, signed "Xela" (Alex spelled backwards) is designated "classic" by Overstreet. Featured on the cover of the retrospective The Thrilling Comic Book Cover Art of Alex Schomburg. We mentioned the Schomburg poll above -- another poll of the best 1938-1949 comic book covers recently concluded, and while the results haven't yet been announced, this made the cut of the top 40 of all-time. High praise indeed for the issue, and if you want to acquire a copy you would be hard pressed to find one this nice! Overstreet 2016 NM- 9.2 value = $14,000.
