Description
Smash Comics #1 (Quality, 1939) CGC VG 4.0 Cream to off-white pages. Overstreet calls this the first robot cover in comic book history, and we'll note that it's an early gorilla cover as well! The "Iron Man" on the cover is better known as Bozo the Robot, and his owner Hugh Hazzard is actually inside of him manning the controls (mind you, Bozo the Robot predated a similarly named clown by several years). The great Will Eisner drew a story for this issue, "Espionage", featuring Black X. Also of note here are the first appearances of Hooded Justice (not to be confused with the "Watchmen" character, this is the hero later known as the Invisible Hood), Chic Carter, and Wings Wendall.
