Action Funnies Ashcan (DC, 1937) CGC VF+ 8.5 Cream to off-white pages. The Action Funnies ashcan, along with its sister title, Action Comics, was created to protect what DC Comics publisher Harry Donenfeld said would be his best-selling comic book title.
In 1937, with no lead feature yet for his "Action" comic book, Donenfeld was so paranoid that some other publisher would steal his beloved title that he had 4 ashcans produced to protect any variation of the name. So he created Action Funnies, Action Comics, Double Action Comics and Triple Action Comics. It's interesting to note that only one copy of the Double Action title and three copies of the Action Comics ashcans are known to exist. No copies of the Triple Action title have ever surfaced.
Only 3 copies of Action Funnies are known to exist - one in the archives of DC Comics, a raw copy sold by Heritage in 2012 for $10,000, and this, the highest-graded example.
For those not familiar with the term ashcan: During the 1930s and 1940s comic book publishers used these to register the trademark for titles and logos that they planned to publish. They would send a copy of the ashcan along with a trademark application to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Only a few ashcans have ever survived making them the rarest comic books in existence.
Though produced in 1937, the cover art eventually saw publication as the cover to Action Comics #3. The interior contents are printed pages from Detective Comics #10.
The provenance of this book is impeccable. The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide ashcan advisor and noted comic book historian, Gary Colabuono, purchased this book, along with the Action Comics ashcan, directly from retired DC president, Sol Harrison, in 1986. This is the first time this book has ever been offered for sale.
The issue is mentioned in Overstreet, but no value is assigned. CGC census 2/21: 1 in 8.5, none higher.
