Tenpenny Funnies #1-8 Group (Peter Laird, 1977-78). Before Peter Laird teamed up with Kevin Eastman to create the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and even years before the two turned out the rare Gobbledygook, Laird was the publisher of this mincomic series. "I think I did about five issues of Tenpenny Funnies," Laird wrote on his blog last year. Here's your chance to bid on eight issues, which we believe to be the complete run.
Laird wrote, "Back in the late 1970's, while I still had my tiny used book and comic store in Northampton [Massachusetts], I tried my hand at self-publishing minicomics. There was a copy shop right across the street, so it was convenient to bop over there and get the 8.5 by 11 inch copies made. They had a cutter which could slice big piles of these copies in half, so it made it easier for me to put together the 5.5 by 4.25 inch comics... I'm not going to say I sold very many of them -- in fact, I probably never recouped the printing costs.)"
These are eight-page minicomics (except for #2 and #8 which have 16 pages each), with art by Laird and other artists. Conan and H.P. Lovecraft were obviously big influences on Laird, and much of the content has a barbarian theme.
The seller of these copies was a customer at the Northampton store back then, and has preserved these mini-comics well -- #1 is in Fine/Very Fine condition, #8 is Very Fine, and the others average VF/NM.
These are a must for the Eastman and Laird fan who has everything!
