    Description

Robert A. Heinlein. The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress. New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1966. First edition. Octavo (8.375 x 5.625 inches, 212 x 142 mm.). 383, [1, blank] pages. Publisher's full light reddish-brown cloth, spine lettered in black, front board lettered with author's initials in gilt; all edges of the text block trimmed; original first printing dust, jacket, priced $5.95 on the front flap. Base of the spine very softly bumped with a couple tiny crimps at the bottom of the joints. Small spots of soiling at bottom corners of pages 158-159. Dust jacket somewhat rubbed, predominantly on the spine and rear panels with a few small spots of color loss; edges very lightly worn with three tiny (each about one-eighth of one inch) tears at the base of the spine panel and a few trivial nicks, each addressed with an old tape mend on the verso (nine short strips in total, most seemingly unnecessary). An exceptional, about fine, copy in a near fine jacket. Winner of the 1967 Hugo Award for best novel and a nominee for the 1966 Nebula. Barron, Anatomy of Wonder (1987), 4-263; Survey of Science Fiction Literature III, pp. 1439-43; Currey, p. 192.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
