Jules Verne. Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1873. First U. S. edition. Octavo (7.875 x 5.375 inches; 200 x 136 mm.). viii, 303, [1, blank] pages; frontispiece and 109 illustrated plates inserted throughout. Publisher's cloth, reddish-brown variant, first state with central jellyfish vignette in gilt on the front board and lacking the final "S" in "Seas" on the spine; spine and front board lettered and ruled in black and stamped in gilt; rear board ruled in blind; brown coated endpapers; flyleaves. Spine slightly skewed; backstrip dulled just a shade; spine ends lightly worn with a handful of minor nicks; joints very lightly chafed; two very shallow dings to the upper edge of the rear board; rear board lightly rubbed; corners softly bumped with touch of wear. Contemporary prize inscription on the front flyleaf (June 1873); very brief note in pencil on the rear pastedown; occasional mild over-opening. Overall, an attractive, near fine copy with only minor wear. One of the more difficult to find English-language Verne variants, with most copies supposedly lost in a warehouse fire, possibly during the Great Boston Fire of 1872. Listed under James R. Osgood & Co's "New Books" in the December 1, 1872, issue of The Literary World (Vol. III, No. 7); in the same issue Lee & Shepard announce "our large warehouse... was destroyed in the Great Fire." The speculated number of surviving copies varies, but is usually under 100. Myers 56; Taves & Michaluk V006; Barron, Anatomy of Wonder (1987), 1-95.
