    Description

Jules Verne. A Journey to the Centre of the Earth. New York: Scribner Armstrong and Co., 1874 (November 1873). First U. S. edition printed in America, following an imported English issue with a Scribner, Welford and Company imprint. Octavo (7 x 4.75 inches; 177 x 120 mm.). vii, 384 pages. Title-page vignette and full-page illustrations throughout by Riou. Publisher's cloth, orange variant (no precedence), spine and front board ruled and decoratively stamped in black and gilt, rear board ruled in blind; all edges of the text block trimmed; pinkish-orange coated endpapers. Spine ends skillfully restored, reinforced and laid down with small amounts of new, matching cloth visible at the upper ends of the joints and along the bottom. Spine somewhat leaning; backstrip gilt lightly worn; corners bumped and worn (since stabilized); some general light soiling. Hinges split, the front seemingly untouched and is still secure, the rear reinforced and since starting to crack (holding at the bottom); text somewhat tanned but not brittle with some occasional spot soiling; endpapers and first and last leaves very lightly foxed; short, very faint tide-mark along the fore-edge of the front endpaper. A nice sophisticated copy, presents as very good. Myers 35; Taves & Michaluk V002; Barron, Anatomy of Wonder (1987), 1-94.
    Estimate: $1,500 and up
