J.R.R. Tolkien - Farmer Giles of Ham, First Edition, 1949, London: George Allen & Unwin, Ltd. 5.5" x 8", orange decorated cloth binding, with illustrations by Pauline Diana Baynes, 79 pages. Condition: Very Good to Fine with no discernible markings or tears. Dust Jacket: Very Good to Fine with small .5" tear on back cover and some evidence of light soiling. The story of Farmer Giles of Ham, an unlikely and unwilling hero, was a tale originally told by Tolkien to his children as they sat under a bridge waiting for a sudden storm to pass. Giles was a fat and comfortable farmer, who had the good fortune to scare a giant away from his farm. Now renowned as a great hero, Giles was also expected to deal with the dragon Chrysophylax when he threatened the town. A rollicking story, and a worthy follow-up to The Hobbit, this book stands as an "in-between" piece, as it shows the development of Tolkien the author from the period after he wrote The Hobbit but before he published The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Little known today, Farmer Giles of Ham is a charming book that will delight any fan of Middle Earth.
