John Wyndham. The Day of The Triffids. London: Michael Joseph, 1951. First edition. Octavo (7.25 x 4.75 inches; 183 x 122 mm.). 302, [2, blank] pages. Publisher's full green cloth; spine lettered and ruled in sliver; all edges of the text block trimmed; in original illustrated dust jacket, priced 10s. 6d. Boards splayed very slightly; bottom of the spine barely pushed; top corners only just tapped. Top edge of the text with just a thin layer of dust-soiling. Dust jacket edges very lightly worn at the spine and fold ends with only a couple trivial nicks; spine panel with a faint sheen near the top and bottom edges, possibly from old tape reinforcements, since removed, but there is nothing to suggest any attempt at restoration; rear panel very lightly rubbed, particularly along the fold edges. Near fine. International Fantasy Award nominee in 1952. Basis for the 1963 film of the same name directed by Steve Sekely. Pringle, Science Fiction: The 100 Best Novels 5; Survey of Science Fiction Literature, pp. 502-507 ("compares favorably to H. G. Wells' catastrophe novels, especially with The War of the Worlds..."); Barron, Anatomy of Wonder (1987), 3-411.
