Jack Finney [Walter Braden Finney, pseud.]. The Body Snatchers. London: Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1955. First English edition, first appearance in hardcover. Octavo (7.125 x 4.875 inches; 182 x 123 mm.). 192 pages. Publisher's red paper-covered boards, spine lettered in black; all edges trimmed; original illustrated dust jacket. Front board slightly splayed with some very minor rippling along the joint; bottom edge of the front board with two tiny bumps, another trivial bump to the bottom of the rear board; top edges just a little dusty; bottom edges barely rubbed. Text block slightly tanned at edges and margins, as expected; top edge somewhat foxed. Final gathering (pages 161-192) slightly sprung but still secure; free endpapers very faintly tanned with a few fox marks. Edges and folds very lightly worn, particularly at the spine ends; fairly mild rubbing to exposed panels; a couple soft, short horizontal creases through the upper margin of the rear flap; rear panel faintly yellowed. Altogether, a very nice copy. Near fine. Source material for four major films. First adapted for the screen by Daniel Mainwaring and Geoffrey Homes in 1956 for Don Siegel's seminal film of the same name, later revisited in 1978, 1993 and 2007. Barron, Anatomy of Wonder (1987), 3-163; Currey p. 153.
