Octavo (7.375 x 5.125 inches, 187 x 130 mm.). viii, 303, [1, blank] pages with first-priority publisher's catalog (16 pages, "Autumn Announcements" dated mdcccxcvii) inserted following the text. Publisher's gray cloth, spine and front board lettered in black, publisher's device stamped in black on the rear board; top and bottom edges of the text block rough-trimmed, fore-edge untrimmed. Spine just barely leaning; backstrip very faintly dulled with a touch of rubbing near the spine ends; spine ends softly pushed; negligible spot-stain or fox mark along the front joint; corners very slightly bent; trace trivial wear along the bottom. Light foxing throughout, largely confined to the endpapers, page edges, catalog and first gathering. An exceptional copy. Near fine. Housed in a custom clamshell case. Hammond B5; Currey, p. 426; Barron, Anatomy of Wonder (1987), 1-105.
