    Description

H.G. Wells. The Invisible Man. A Grotesque Romance. London: C. Arthur Pearson, 1897. First edition. Octavo (7.1875 x 4.75 inches; 182 x 121 mm.). viii, 245, [1], [2, ads] pages (note: page [1] is mis-numbered "2."). Publisher's full red cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, front board lettered in gilt and decoratively stamped in black; all edges of the text block trimmed. Spine slightly leaning; backstrip faintly dulled with a few trivial black specks; spine ends softly pushed; light rubbing to front joint; front board very lightly soiled with a couple small, faint grayish blemishes; corners tapped with a touch of wear. Top edge of the text somewhat darkened; page margins (lightly) and endpapers (more so) tanned but neither feel brittle; occasional mild over-opening; previous owner signature on the title-page and bookplate to the front pastedown. A nice copy with transgressions common for this title but to a lesser extent than we're used to seeing. Very good. Source for the 1933 Universal Horror classic of the same name, directed by James Whale and starring Claude Rains. Hammond B4; Currey p. 419.
