Olaf Stapledon / November 1930." Octavo (7.5 x 4.875 inches; 190 x 127 mm.). xi, [1, blank], 355, [1, printer's imprint], [8, publisher's ads] pages. Publisher's full dark blue cloth; spine lettered and ruled in gilt; front board with blind-ruled border; top edge trimmed, others untrimmed; original first-state dust jacket, printed in black on patterned yellow paper. Mild shelf wear at extremities of binding; bumping at corners; spine ends slightly pushed; very light rubbing to boards. Normal age toning to edges and interior of text block; top edge a bit dust-soiled; fore-edges softened just a touch. Some faint thumbsoiling scattered throughout; a bit of bumping to upper corner of text block; short tear at fore-edge margin of the leaf with pages 97-98. Fair amount of edge wear to jacket, resulting in chipping and rumpling at spine and flap fold ends, reinforced with clear tape at verso; wear along folds, with a handful of short tears; very slight dulling and rubbing to exposed panels; some soft creasing, particularly at spine panel. Tape reinforcements at verso along top edge. Very good book in a good jacket, uncommon in any condition. Scarce at auction, with only three records in Rare Book Hub. Barron, Anatomy of Wonder, 2-109 ("remains something of a masterpiece"); Currey, p. 467.
