Description
H. P. Lovecraft Letter to Clark Ashton Smith (1925). On August 28, 1925, H. P. Lovecraft wrote this correspondence to Clark Ashton Smith only a few short years before the two, alongside Robert E. Howard, would become the pillars of the Golden Age of Weird Tales. Their friendship began in 1920, when Smith composed the long poem, "The Hashish Eater," leading Lovecraft to send a fan letter, thereby forging a friendship that would last the rest of Lovecraft's life. Excerpts include Lovecraft mentioning that Smith's "The Abominations of Yondo," short story "is a masterpiece of atmosphere..." and that "I shall send it to Weird Tales with the most urgent recommendation..." Also included is praise for Smith's translations of Charles Baudelaire's "The Flowers of Evil," and confiding in Smith that in years past "...I enjoyed showing my stuff to a fairly ample audience, but as I grow older I care less & less about it..." The letter is signed by Lovecraft on the verso of the page with his initials, "HPL." The original envelope that contained the letter is included, presenting with mild soiling and a tear down the side that was used to access its contents. The letter is in Very Fine condition and the envelope is in Good condition.From the Howard Lowery Collection.
