    Description

Bram Stoker. Dracula. Westminster: Archibald Constable & Co., 1904. Stated eighth edition. Inscribed by the author on front free endpaper, "Miss Annie Marshall / with Bram Stoker's very / kind remembrances / Cruden Bay / 23/07/04." Octavo (7 x 4.75 inches, 179 x 121 mm.). vii, [1], 390, [2, blank] pages. Publisher's full dark blue cloth, front and spine lettered in gilt and red, front stamped with red floral decoration; bottom edge untrimmed, others trimmed. Slight skew to spine; wear to cloth at spine ends and joints, spine ends pushed, crease running vertical length of spine; moderate soiling and light rubbing to boards; shelf wear along bottom edge; corners bumped and starting to fray just a touch. Age yellowing to edges and interior of text block; speckles of foxing at edges; top scuffed; a bit of wear to untrimmed edges at bottom. Rear hinge split but still sound; foxing to endpapers and first and last several leaves of text block; handful of instances of faint marginal thumbsoiling and further foxing scattered throughout. About very good, overall. Inscription could possibly refer to his mother-in-law, Phillippa Anne Marshall, or a relative of hers. Cruden Bay, a small village on the northeast coast of Scotland, was known to have been a vacation spot of Stoker's during the development and writing of his iconic vampire novel, and the local ruins, Slains Castle, are believed to have inspired the setting of his story (BBC, 13 November 2017).
