Alfred Bestall - More Rupert Adventures (The Daily Express, 1944). First appearing in the Daily Express on November 8, 1920, Rupert the Bear was the creation of Mary Tourtel and her husband, Herbert. Originally created to compete with Charles Folkard's Teddy Tail, which had proved a success for rival paper, the Daily Mail, Rupert was a sensation, quickly eclipsing Teddy in popularity (indeed, Teddy was dropped from the Mail during the war years, while plucky Rupert lived on). The Tourtels chronicled Ruperts adventures, in charming drawings and verse, until Mary's retirement due to failing eyesight in 1935 (she died at the age of 74 in 1948). With Mary's departure, Alfred Bestall was brought on-board to chronicle the little bear's adventures. Bestall took Rupert to new heights of popularity, toiling tirelessly on the feature until a disagreement with management sparked his resignation in 1973. One of the longest lasting innovations Bestall brought to the strip was the introduction of Annuals; book-sized reprints of popular strips that are hotly collected today. The Annual offered here, is in Very Good condition, with the normal corner-rounding that one would expect from a children's book of this vintage. There are several light creases at the bottom right corner and the book bears the inscription, "Colin Mansi, 1944 (8 years old)" on the first page (the price of 3'6 is unclipped, however). The first illustration has been colored in crayon, as has the last. Otherwise, the book is in very nice shape, with vibrant colors and supple, white pages. Whether you're familiar with Rupert, or you're meeting the little brown bear for the first time, this is a charming book for young and old alike.
