    Description

[George Tucker]. A Voyage to the Moon: With Some Account of the Manners and Customs, Science and Philosophy, of the People Morosofia, and Other Lunarians. By Joseph Atterley (pseudonym). New York: Elam Bliss, 1827. First edition. Twelvemo in sixes (7 x 4.375 inches; 179 x 110 mm.). 264 pages. Recent brown quarter-leather, spine ruled in gilt with a gilt-lettered red morocco label, over marbled-paper covered boards; page edges speckled brown; plain endpapers, single contemporary binder's blank at the rear. Backstrip very faintly dulled; boards lightly rubbed, particularly along the bottom edge. Text block foxed throughout, mostly in the margins but on occasion more extensively; small ink stain on page 22, in the text, with some offsetting opposite; a few leaves dog-eared; annotations in pencil throughout. Very good. Uncommon at auction, with just two records from the last century found in Rare Book Hub (both 2015). "Tucker was appointed professor of moral philosophy at [Thomas] Jefferson's newly opened University of Virginia, a position he would hold for twenty years. Among other subjects, Tucker taught rhetoric, metaphysics, and political economy. Tucker's second novel, A Voyage to the Moon..., is America's first work of interplanetary science fiction" (R. Bruce Bickley, Jr. (contributor). Southern Writers: A New Biographical Dictionary. Baton Rouge: 2006. p. 409). Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 91; Barron, Anatomy of Wonder (1987), 1-4.
