DescriptionWoody Woodpecker Early Storyboard Drawing Group of 2 (Walter Lantz, c. 1940s). Our favorite screwy woodpecker got his start in the 1940 Andy Panda short, Knock, Knock, where he appears up on the roof to bedevil Andy's Papa. His look -- very long, sharp beak with fat, stubby legs -- lasted only a few cartoons before he was redesigned for 1944's The Barber of Seville. This is a set of two very early storyboard drawings with a fat-legged version of Woody, obviously still being designed (his face is partially blue instead of all red, and he's missing his white feather "collar"). The gag portrayed here is similar to one in Woody's second appearance (and first official short), 1941's Woody Woodpecker, with Woody winding up his tail for a fast flight, rather than spinning his legs like wheels as shown in the cartoon. We believe these to be some of the earliest pieces of Woody Woodpecker in existence! The art is in graphite and color pencil on two separate pieces of paper; both are together in a double aperture mat, with opening sizes of 7.5" x 6". The art is framed with Plexiglas for an overall size 22.75" x 12". Very Good condition.
