Winsor McCay Gertie the Dinosaur Animation Drawing Original Art (1914). Gertie drains the lake dry to quench her thirst, in this original hand-drawn and inked animation drawing. Although artist Winsor McCay (1869 - 1934) was best known as a newspaper editorial cartoonist and creator of the celebrated strip Little Nemo in Slumberland, he was also a pioneer in the field of animation. Gertie, his third cartoon, was done without the help of cels -- the entire short was shot from McCay's inked drawings like this. This film premiered on February 8, 1914 at the Palace Theater in Chicago. In the original traveling road show attraction, McCay appeared onstage to "introduce" Gertie to the audience, who seemed to hear his commands; at one point, McCay seems to actually step into the cartoon to interact with her. This drawing, numbered 283 in the lower right corner, is one of the very rare pieces to show "McCay" in the scene. The cartoon is ranked #6 in Jerry Beck's book The 50 Greatest Cartoons. The art is on 8.5" x 6.75" rice paper that has been mounted to a slightly larger piece of board. The art is matted and framed with Plexiglas for an overall size of 21" x 19". Frame is sold as-is. Art condition is Very Good.More information about Winsor McCay, also known as McCay, Winsor, Winsor McCay, Winsor MacCay, MacCay, Winsor.
