Walt Disney's Bambi Book Cover Original Art by Mel Shaw (Walt Disney/Simon & Schuster, c. 1940s). Here's one of the most attractive, and unusual vintage illustrations of Bambi we have seen to date. The 1940s Golden Book edition of Walt Disney's Bambi was immensely popular, staying in print for many years, with versions from 1972 readily available on eBay. The book's cover, painted by Disney animator and writer Mel Shaw (1914 - 2012), was originally designed to have an image of Bambi with added felt or "flocked" for a fuzzy version, but with a concern that children may want to lick the felt or fuzz, a standard slick version was also published. We believe this to be Mel Shaw's original concept painting for the cover of the first edition. Note that the image of Bambi has been lightly flocked to display the "fuzzy" effect the publisher wanted. In comparing this painting to the published edition (a copy of the 1949 "Fuzzy" edition is included with the art), it's our humble opinion that this original concept painting features much better detail, while retaining the "big-eyed" charm of the printed edition. The artwork is in gouache on heavy illustration board measuring 11" x 13.75" with an approximate image size of 7.25" x 9.25". An 11" x 14" mat is included, but not physically attached. Finding a painting of this vintage with flocking attached, and in this condition, is amazing! The artboard does show its age in the outer borders (nicely hidden by the mat), and is in overall Good condition, but the image itself is in Very Good condition, with most of the flocking intact.Auction Info
