Virgin Ross - Pepe le Pew and Penelope Illustration (Warner Brothers, c. 1990s). Amorous skunk Pepe has confused Penelope (the black cat who accidentally gets a white stripe painted down her back) for one of his own once again, in this expressive drawing by Virgil Ross (1907 - 1996). Mr. Ross had a long career as an animator, working with legends like Ub Iwerks, Tex Avery, Bob Clampett, and Friz Freleng, among others. He worked on Oscar-nominated shorts like A Wild Hare (the first "true" appearance of Bugs Bunny), and he received the prestigious Winsor McCay Achievement Award in 1988. This piece is done in blue pencil and graphite on a sheet of 12 field animation paper, with an image area measuring 9" wide by 5" tall. Signed in the lower right. Fine condition.
