Description

UPA Studios Concept Art Group of 2, Bob "Yoshi" Inman (UPA, c. 1960s) Two wonderful pieces of concept art from long-time UPA employee, Bob "Yoshi" Inman, who lent his distinctive modernist take to the studios famously stylized output. These two pieces, look almost like works that could have been done as part of a travel sketchbook, but in actuality were likely done as concept art for UPA television productions made during the 1960s. The first looks to be a scene from the country of Mali, featuring the famous adobe and brick architecture for which it is so well-known. Locals, in their brightly-patterned clothing, go about their business, fishing, carrying water, etc. This piece is quite interesting in that the background itself is a very loose, impressionistic wash, which ochre and sepia paint tones. All of the black line work and the colorful figures moving throughout the frame are on cels mounted over the illustration board. The second is a harbor scene, with small sailboats and a yacht, in the foreground and a quaint little town filling in the background. This piece has been completed on a scratchboard, with black wax providing the outlines and the "negative space" being comprised of the vivid orange and magenta layer underneath. They are both matted together on one large mat board, the reverse sides of both read "UPA presentation". Both pieces measure 11" x 8". In Fine condition.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
