    Description

UPA Studios Color Key Paintings Group of 4, Bob "Yoshi" Inman, (UPA, c. 1960s). Beautiful collection of four (4) small color keys, produced at UPA, likely for television productions in the 1960s. These tiny pieces illustrate perfectly the bold design sense which made UPA famous. Their daring use of color and style eschewed any attempts at realism. Instead, they rebelled against artistic conventions in animation and wholeheartedly adopted the modernist trend popular in graphic design during this period. The pieces consist of a rural town with a church tower (which looks as though it could be set in Spain or Italy), a mountainous scene with dark, impressionistic inking on a cel laid over the painted image, a bold "cave" interior with a small car - it looks as though this piece has been done in mixed-media - with the addition of acrylic paint. The last is of a foreboding "haunted house", perched on a hill under a gloomy sky. The four pieces are matted and measure 5.5" x 4" to 10" x 5". All are in Fine condition.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
