Unruly Hare/Cross Country Detours Elmer Fudd Color Model Cel on Production Background (Warner Brothers, 1945/40). "I've been workin' on the wail woad, all the wive wong day!" sings Elmer in this rare Frank Tashlin-directed short. Only two Bugs Bunny shorts were directed by Mr. Tashlin, who went on to work as a gag writer for the Marx Brothers and Lucille Ball. He ultimately became a successful live-action director of films such as The Girl Can't Help It and six Jerry Lewis movies. This is an original hand-inked, hand-painted color model cel of Elmer Fudd. In the final version of this image, which can be seen around the 1:32 mark, Elmer's shirt is a darker shade of brown. The full-figure image measures 6" x 5.5" on a 12 field cel. The cel is over a hand-painted production background from the Tex Avery-directed Cross Country Detours released in theaters in 1940. Painted in gouache on board, the background can be seen at the 1:23 mark and works flawlessly with the cel. Warner Brothers Studio artwork from this era is incredibly rare and setups this nice from a Tashlin-directed cartoon are the rarest of all. The cel has minor paint loss on Elmer's leg and surveying tool and clear tape along the top edge. Condition for the setup is Very Good. From the Rev Chaney Archives.
