The Ugly Duckling Production Cel Courvoisier Setup (Walt Disney, 1939). Here is an outstanding Courvoisier setup from Walt Disney's 1939 Silly Symphony short, The Ugly Duckling. This Academy Award-winning short is based on the fairy tale The Ugly Duckling by Hans Christian Andersen, where a duckling is harassed and persecuted because of his homeliness but eventually matures into a swan, the most beautiful bird of all. Hand-inked, hand-painted and paired with a Courvoisier background, this is one of the most striking production cel setups we have seen from The Ugly Duckling. You will see this image around the 8:08 time mark. In the late 1930s, The Walt Disney Studios was riding on a tidal wave of success. Guthrie Courvoisier, President of the highly esteemed Courvoisier Galleries in San Francisco, was aware of Disney's escalating reputation, and saw vast opportunity in it. Guthrie believed that the Disney paintings on celluloid could be sold as valuable art pieces to the public through art galleries and museums all over the world. The piece is housed in a Plexiglas-fronted frame with original Courvoisier cream color matboard. Matboard aperture is 11" x 8.79". Original Courvoisier Certificate of Authenticity is affixed to back of frame. Frame sold as-is. Cel warping with very light paint cracking on the mother swans wing. Overall condition is Very Good. From the Robert Forbes Collection.
