    Description

The Tell-Tale Heart Production Cel and Key Master Background (UPA, 1953). "The story is told through the eyes of a madman, who, like all of us, believed he was sane." This Ted Parmelee-directed cartoon begins with these words. It was based on the 1843 short story by Edgar Allan Poe, adapted by Bill Scott and Fred Grable, with Paul Julian being credited for design and color. Pat Mathews was the head animator, with narration by actor James Mason. This groundbreaking cartoon was nominated for an Academy Award and was named the 24th greatest cartoon in Jerry Beck's book The 50 Greatest Cartoons. This is a stunning abstract cel and Key Master background that can be seen at the 5:24 mark, during the dialogue "But come in please, you'll want to look through the house." This is from the peak of UPA studios creativity. The cel and Key Master hand-painted background are in a vintage mat that reads "Original by UPA." Mat measures 17" x 14" with an opening of 10.5" x 8". Abstract facial images are 4" to 7". Very important piece of animation history! Minor handling wear. Very Good condition.
