The Sinking of the Lusitania Nitrate Production Cel (Winsor McCay, 1918). "The man who fired the shot was decorated by the Kaiser! And yet they tell us to not hate the Hun!" This is the ending passage shown on screen after a mother and child drown in this silent animated film by Winsor McCay. The animated film The Sinking of the Lusitania was Winsor McCay's follow up to his groundbreaking Gertie the Dinosaur. It was inspired by the sinking of the RMS Lusitania by a German U- Boat. This act killed 1,200 people and helped trigger World War I. McCay created ten animated films from 1911-1921 and is considered one of the founding fathers of animation. He financed this short with his own money and drew the frames in India ink at his home over a two year period. The Sinking of the Lusitania is one of the earliest dramatic works done in animation. It re-creates the never photographed 1915 sinking of the British Liner RMS Lusitania, in a 12 minute animated film. William Randolph Hearst downplayed this event as he was opposed to World War I. A total of 128 Americans died among the 1,198 killed. Mr. McCay was outraged, and his film became one of the first World War Propaganda Films. The film was selected for preservation by the National Film Registry in 2017. This is a rare black and white nitrate production cel from this historic film. It is inked with "This is one of my original drawings Winsor McCay" on the cel. The eerie image of the German U Boat off in the distance behind the Lusitania water flow is in a frame of 18" x 16" with a mat opening of 9" x 7". Very few of these cels from this film come to market. A rare opportunity for discerning collectors of animation art! Frame is sold as-is. Artwork is in Very Good condition.
