The Secret of NIMH Old Mill Painted Background with Overlay (Don Bluth, 1982). This original background painting and matching overlay cel of the old mill and foreground tree were created by an artist at the Don Bluth Studio and photographed in production of the animated feature based on Mrs. Frisby and the Rate of NIMH by Robert C. O'Brien. This establishing shot appears in the film as Mrs. Brisby enters the mill to escape from Dragon, the farm cat. Studio designations "004 BG-97" are written in the bottom margin of the background and "OL 97.1" at the top of the overlay cel to mark each original's place in the film.
Director and studio head Don Bluth wrote his initials -- "DB" -- in the bottom margin to signify his approval of this background painting. This painting is likely the work of Ron Dias or Don Moore, both of whom are credited for backgrounds on the film.
The art is in gouache and airbrush on skimmed 17.5" x 13.5" illustration board, with an overlay cel of the old tree at the right. Minor handling wear. Fine condition.
