DescriptionThe Reluctant Dragon Animation Drawing (Walt Disney, 1941). This full-figure final animation drawing of the Reluctant Dragon, the film's title character, was created by a Disney Studio animator in production of the animated and live-action feature, and a cel painting was made directly from it. In this scene, the Dragon exhales a smoke screen to hide himself and Sir Giles from the onlooking townspeople. Ward Kimball, one of Walt Disney's trusted circle of master animators known as his "Nine Old Men," supervised the animation of the Dragon including this important scene. Some of the under-drawing is undoubtedly his work. The Reluctant Dragon was Disney's first feature to combine live-action and animation. Robert Benchley visits the Studio to pitch Walt Disney on making an animated film based on Kenneth's Grahame's fine story. He ends up taking the audience on a tour of the studio for a look at how animated films are made. The completed film of The Reluctant Dragon is the film's grand finale. The animator wrote the studio designation "46" at lower right to indicate this original's place in the scene. Handwritten animation notes appear above the image: "No track back on upper part of body" by the animator and "O.K. if you say so" by his assistant, whose initials appear at bottom right. The art is in graphite with red and green pencil on a sheet of 16 field 5-peghole animation paper, with an image size of 6" x 8.25". Very Good condition with minor handling wear.
