DescriptionThe Pointer Mickey Mouse and Pluto Production Cels Courvoisier Setup with Walt Disney Signature (Walt Disney, 1939). This Clyde Geronimi-directed short was nominated for an Academy Award (it lost out to Disney's other nominated short, Ugly Duckling), and is considered a milestone Mickey Mouse cartoon. It was the first regular theatrical short to feature Fred Moore's new design for Mickey, giving him eyes with pupils instead of the former "shoe-button" eye design Mickey sported during his early years. Here is a Courvoisier setup that includes cels of Mickey and Pluto from this fun short. In addition to Fred Moore, other animators on the cartoon included Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, Shamus Culhane, and Preston Blair, to name but a few. This cartoon was noted for its lush forest backgrounds, but this is a custom Courvoisier painting done in watercolors on lightweight board. Courvoisier setups usually include cels carefully trimmed to outline and glued directly on the background painting, as does this example. It's in both the original mat with hand-lettering and an "Original WDP" stamp, and with a second mat added that includes a large cutaway to reveal this item's most important attribute – it was hand-signed by none other than Walt Disney himself, with his inscription "To Silby McColm with best wishes, Walt Disney" in blue crayon. Wow! The original mat has an opening of 11" x 8"; the overall mat size is 18.5" x 16.5". The trimmed cels are starting to work loose in places, and there is some paint separation in both figures; however, this is still a very attractive piece that will look great framed an on the wall. Good condition.
