The Mad Doctor Mickey Mouse Production Cel and Key Master Background (Walt Disney, 1933). "Pluto?...Pluto?" Mickey Mouse enters the house of Dr. XXX -- the Mad Doctor -- in search of Pluto. He goes up the stairs and calls for his dog, then goes down the stairs and calls for him again. Both times, skeletons peek out from behind each of the floor steps. This Mickey and Pluto theatrical short was deemed so scary at the time that it was banned in the UK as well as Nazi Germany. David Hand directed this short with much of the animation done by Art Babbitt. It was released on 1/20/33. This is a rare Mickey Mouse full nitrate black and white cel Key Master setup, featuring the original gouache hand-painted production background with the nitrate production cel of the skeletons peeking out at Mickey, after he descends the stairs. It can be seen at the 3:00 mark into the short. Mickey Mouse was painted in on the cel at a later date by the studio, to be used in the Disney story book Mickey Mouse Movie Stories on page 69. Bottom margin has Chuck and M9. Key Master setups of Mickey Mouse from black and white theatrical shorts are considered the rarest of all Disney animation setups. Less than 25 are believed to even exist. This setup was originally part of the prestigious "Herbert Black Collection of Disney Animation Art." The background and hand-inked, hand-painted production cel are stapled together and in a mat of 20" x 16". The cel and background are approximately 11" x 9.5". Background is on 2-peghole 12 field background board. The black and white production background of spider webs and basement staircase is magnificent. A stunning setup! Very good condition.
