Description

The Lion King Presentation Cel and Production Background (Walt Disney, 1994). The Lion King represents the Disney renaissance at its peak. This film is the highest grossing hand-drawn animated film in the history of cinema with sales of $950,000,000. It has spawned two direct-to-video feature films (a Prequel and a sequel), a Saturday morning cartoon series, and most impressively a major Broadway and global-touring play. Its one of the most important films in the history of Disney. Sotheby's held a special sale of hand-painted backgrounds from this film in 1995. Each background had a special "one of one" cel hand-painted by the Disney Ink and Paint Department to be placed over these backgrounds. Considering there are no production cels from this movie, these are extremely rare items. This is Sotheby's lot #108, a beautiful background with a production overlay of the rocks. On the rocks stands Simba with Zazu. Looking on in dramatic fashion is the villain, the Jeremy Irons-voiced Scar. Framed with Plexiglas in an original Disney frame, matted with an opening of 9" x 15". Scar is a menacing 8", while Simba and Zazu are 4" long x 2.5" at the upper point. An impressive set-up, in Fine Condition, with a Disney seal stamped on the cel.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
