    Description

The Karnival Kid Painted Production Background with Custom Mickey Mouse Cel (Walt Disney, 1929/2001). Hot dog vendor Mickey deals with an unruly wienie in this scene from the ninth Mickey Mouse cartoon, co-directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks. This was the first short where Mickey speaks words (in past shorts, he whistled, cried, and laughed, but no dialog). It was released on 5/23/29. This is a rare 12 field 2-peghole hand-painted black and white production background from The Karnival Kid, one of the earliest backgrounds we have seen from a Mickey Mouse short. It is noted as Scene 17 in the bottom border, and can be found in the film at the 4:34 mark. A special hand-painted presentation cel of Mickey Mouse from this scene was prepared in 2001 and placed on this background for display at the "Walt Disney -- The Man and His Magic" event held on May 13 through September 4, 2001 at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum. This exhibit was presented by The Walt Disney Family Foundation/Retlaw Enterprises. The new cel of Mickey has an figure size of 6.25". The original 1929 background is 11.5" x 9.5". Minor handling and edge wear to background. Very Good condition.
