The Hunchback of Notre Dame Preliminary Background (Walt Disney, 1996). Disney's animated adaptation of Victor Hugo's classic tale was an instant box office hit. Hugo originally wrote it as a means of bringing awareness to the dwindling Gothic architecture in the early 19th century Paris, much of it being replaced with newer style buildings. This original preliminary background painting of a gothic-style stairway from the early developmental stages in the production of this film is by Disney artist Greg Drolette (1960 -- 2007). Mr. Drolette's work can be seen in many of the films of Disney's renaissance. This painting is beautifully rendered in gouache on 17" x 12" background board. The detail and use of shadow and light make this painting a true masterpiece. While this image did not make it into the final film, it does bear production, sequence and scene numbers along the bottom and a Disney property stamp on the back. No cels were used in the production of this film, so the only original artwork available is in the form of pencil drawings, concept art and background paintings and very few of those were ever released by the studio. Minor handling and condition is Very Good.
